Second Story And Be The Peace Institute Host ‘One Billion Rising’ Event

One Billion Rising is a global movement to end rape and sexual violence against women.

As part of International Women’s Day on March 8th, Second Story Women’s Centre are pairing with Be The Peace Institute to put on an event.

“Artistic UpRising – Art that Shines A Light on Gender-Based Violence.”

Artists have created revolutionary art for the event, portraying violence against women and girls.

Throughout the day there will also be conversations around the #MeToo movement, and “What’s the Buzz about gender?”

Sue Bookchin, Executive Director of the Institute, hopes it will help people better understand the complexities of intimate partner violence.

She says when people see what’s happening globally, and see gender bias, to speak up.

“And take action, and take a stand,” she says.

“And be in solidarity with people all over the world who are recognizing that this is no longer accceptable and really needs to end.”

She says people can take action by running for office, starting initiatives, write or any way that helps keep the issue on the radar.

Rhonda Lemire, Executive Director of Second Story, says events like these are important to keep the discussion around gender-based violence going.

She says it’s not just a women’s or survivor’s issue, it’s a human issue.

“Their family members … their community, their well-being, their liveliness [and] their happiness.”

Lemire says they’ll continue to talk about the issue until it isn’t one anymore.

Artistic Uprising is a free event, and runs from noon until 9 pm at the Lunenburg School of Arts.
