SHAID Tree Not Worried About Influx Of Animals After SPCA Resigns

The Lunenburg SPCA may have folded but SHAID Tree Animal Shelter says they’re not too worried.

Danny Lohnes, president of SHAID’s board of directors, says recent renovations to their shelter make him confident they can handle more animals.

“SHAID’s there, we’re ready, our budget has been set to handle anything so we should be fine.”

Lohnes says they often had animals referred to SHAID by the Lunenburg branch anyway.

He says his group is having a pretty quiet winter.

“We had a very good couple of months, we had six dogs in, we have zero now,” says Lohnes. “And our quarantine for cats opened up and we had a small amount so I think we’re down to four cats right now.”

And with recent renovations, the shelter has increased capacity.

Lohnes says another group in the area would be helpful but he’s not worried about the future.

The chair of the former SPCA resigned using a public statement on Facebook this week hightlighting issues with the provincial body of the SPCA.

The provincial body says they’ll be attempting to revive the branch in the future.
