It’s budget season in Nova Scotia.
And the province made several major funding announcements yesterday ahead next week’s budget.
Stephen McNeil announced his government will spend $120 million to connect more homes and businesses to internet and enhance service for under-served communities.
Rural internet has long been a hot topic in Lunenburg and Queens counties, with many in the northern parts of the county struggling to connect.
The funding is a one-time investment with money coming from offshore revenues.
The province also announced funding for job training for people on the Autism spectrum, research and innovation projects, needle exchange programs and assistance for low-income Nova Scotians to make their homes more energy efficient.
An additional $40 million will fund research and innovation projects, including money for post-secondary research in oceans, clean energy, and health.
In total, the province will invest about $244 million in new projects by the end of 2017-18.
The McNeil Liberals will present the budget on March 20.
