Light Pollution A Concern For Deep Sky Eye Observatory

The Deep Sky Eye Observatory in Quinan draws tourists from around the world.

They come for an amazing view of the stars, the planets and far-off galaxies.

The Yarmouth County astro-tourism attraction is certified as a UNESCO-Starlight Tourist Destination in North America.

But owner/operator Tim Doucette says with an increase in the use of full spectrum lighting, that designation could be in peril.

He says the new LED-style lighting is the main culprit.

“What happens is, you basically get light that’s scattering in the atmosphere and reflecting back down and it’s b;locking out star light.”

But Doucette reducing light pollution is more than just about protecting the night sky view.

“It’s about the environment and people’s health. There are certain types of species that require darkness in order to survive. There’s the aspect of our own health. There are lights that are on all night and basically keep us awake.”

Doucette is a member of the Starlight Development Committee whose mandate is to educate about light pollution.

He’s says they’ll be approaching local retailers with information.

If you missed the interview with Tim Doucette on yesterday’s Y95 CJLS Weekender, you can listen again.

The program will be posted to our web and Facebook pages shortly.
