Springfield Barn Fire Destroys Building And Farm Equipment

A big fire Wednesday evening in Springfield destroyed a barn and equipment.

The fire broke out at about 7 o’clock Wednesday evening.

David Drew took his cows out back with his grandson and left for New Germany to get gas when his wife called to say the barn was on fire.

“Somebody had come over to tell her one of the barns was on fire. She went out to have a look and the barn was completely engulfed. We had only been gone less than half an hour,” said Drew.

Drew says the barn was completely destroyed along with his tractor, 2 ride-on lawn mowers, 6 bales of hay and a seeder.

However, it could have been worse.

“When the firefighters arrived from from Middleton, Nictaux, Hemford, New Germany and Springfield, there wasn’t anything they could do except contain it. There’s another barn 40 feet away from the one that was burning down. We were lucky it didn’t spread. There was a lot hay in the other barn that could have been a disaster.”

The cause of the fire is unknown.
