Regional Collaboration Discussed At Joint Council Meeting

The Town of Yarmouth and the municipalities of Argyle and Yarmouth are working on areas of common interest.

Regional collaboration was discussed at a joint council meeting Wednesday.

Councillors were asked what they would like to see on the list.

Mayor Pam Mood says the Mariners Centre, airport, doctor recruitment, YMCA, ferry terminal and the library are on the regional list.

“It doesn’t mean they all stay on the list. What do we do with the Yarmouth waterfront? How do we expand planning? Is that something we should discuss regionally. There’s also arts and culture and ports.”

Mood says it’s a working document with a goal of reaching a Memorandum of Understanding.

“These are very good discussions, it’s so positive. No one is afraid to speak their mind at the table.”

Mayor Mood says they already share or collaborate on nearly 30 services and initiatives.

Argyle Warden Richard Donaldson says the three councils have “set the bar” when it comes to cooperation and collaboration.

Deputy Warden John Cunningham says while talks on collaboration continue, there have been no official or formal discussions on amalgamation.

Although he says that subject could be come up in the future.
