Health Care System Remains In Crisis Says Shelburne Mayor

The possibility of holding a ‘day of action’ at the province’s legislature will be discussed at an upcoming meeting of the Nova Scotia Health Crisis Working Group.

It’s a lobby effort to bring attention to a health-care system that Shelburne Mayor Karen Mattatall says is failing many rural communities.

“The working group is about more than just Shelburne County. It’s rural Nova Scotia. But, as an example, over the Easter weekend, the ER at Roseway was closed every night again, so we haven’t seen any improvement there.”

The group, whose members include municipal governments, citizens and a partnership with the Nova Scotia Health Coalition, will meet again April 16 in Shelburne.

Mattatal says the public is encouraged to attend.

“There’s certainly participation from, I think about 11 municipal units, from Mahone Bay around to Digby. We’re going to develop resolutions regarding the health care crisis to go to UNSM (Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities).

She says the affect on rural communities of ER closures and doctor shortages also puts additional pressures on hospitals in larger centres.

She says the province needs at take action now.
