Province Still Won’t Release Ferry Passenger Counts

The Liberal government still insists they won’t release passenger numbers of the Yarmouth Ferry until September.

Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan says he hasn’t asked operator, Bay Ferries for any passenger numbers.

“The peak season is August and September so it would be very tough to determine based on what the numbers are for June, what August and September are going to look like.”

MacLellan says Bay Ferries has a plan and the government will see it through.

“We’re looking to attract American travellers. August is going to be critical for us, September ‘s going to be even bigger. That’s really going to tell the tale for the season so that’s all we have to go on.”

MacLellan says he’s hearing from business owners in Yarmouth that tourism is up.

He says government has made a commitment to Bay Ferries and Nova Scotians.

Portland has said they will be releasing their passenger counts this week.

Despite that, MacLellan says there is no real way to guage how the ferry is performing until the season wraps up in September.
