Minister MacLellan Rides The Cat To Portland

Minister Geoff MacLellan travelled on the Cat ferry this week to meet with officials in Portland.

They discussed easing border crossings, access to the dock and tourism.

What they didn`t discuss was passenger numbers.

MacLellan says Portland has their obligations to release numbers but that government here will stick to their plan.

“Despite what the numbers would look like – if they were extremely high then it wouldn’t be cause for celebration. If they were extremely low three weeks in, it wouldn’t be cause for panic.”

MacLellan says he didn’t discuss passenger numbers with Portland even though they plan to release their passenger counts this week.

He says Nova Scotia wants a larger pool of data before they draw conclusions.

“The reason why we sort of got this seasonal focus is that we really won’t know until we get through this peak season – which really is August and September – how we’re doing and how we’re tracking.”

MacLellan says the province will release ferry passenger counts at the end of the season when they will show a more complete picture.
