Another Economic Blow

Its another major blow for Pictou County as a call centre prepares to close, throwing 250 people out of work. Convergy’s in New Glasgow will close in September. Word of the closure comes just a couple of months after Michelin announced 500 jobs would be disappearing at its Granton plant. PC Economic and Rural development critic Karla MacFarlane, who’s also the MLA for Pictou West, says the community is in shock. She says: “Between Michelin and the sad news of Convergeys yesterday, we’re totalling about 800 jobs and in some cases, these are families. I met a family yesterday, two members of whom work at Convergys.” MacFarlane says whats even worse is learning through a newspaper report that workers at the Convergys call centre may not even receive any severance. She’s calling on the McNeil government to declare Pictou County an area needing immediate job and economic relief.
