The Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre will be putting its best foot forward when the ESSO Cup begins today.
Workers at the facility have been preparing to host the Canadian Women’s Midget Hockey Championships.
Operator, Ryan Walker says it took over 60 hours between eight people just to get the ice ready.
Walker explains they cut down the old surface and begin the process.
“We’ll spray the ice down with white powder paint, after that we’ll build a little bit over top of that to seal it in. And then, we’ll paint all of our markings.”
Walker says they had to flood the ice over a couple of days to build it back up.
He expects players and fans will appreciate the new surface.
“The tournament, which is a lighter load than we’re used to with minor hockey, and a lot of practices, games every hour on the hour. So we’re spread out a little bit. The ice is going to maintain itself quite well.”
Walker anticipates the surface will continue to look good as the top Midget Women’s team from across the country play several games a day on it this week, on the way to Saturday’s championship match up.
Residents will also get a chance to enjoy the ice once the tournament ends.
The markings will stay in place until the ice is pulled up later this spring.
