Province Receives Study On Highway Twinning

The topic of twinning parts of Nova Scotia’s 100 series highways is back on the provincial table.

A study commissioned by the McNeil government has returned with a break down of what it would take to divide eight sections of highway.

That includes 71 kilometres of the 103 between Tantallon and Bridgewater.

The total projected cost is around $2.4-billion.

Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan says it won’t be a quick fix.

“The reality is we’re decades and decades away from getting any of this large scale twinning done at the current rate,” he says.

The study proposes highway tolls which MacLellan says would speed up the timetable significantly.

He says public consultation is still needed before any decision can be made.

“We hope that there will be a flood of feed back and interest in this and then we’ll start to look at what the public interest is going to look like.”

MacLellan says if the public is on board construction could begin within the next few years.
