Business is booming again in Queens County. Two years after the closure of Bowater Mersey, the region appears to be rebounding. Just this week, Queens Council gave its blessing to five applications for setting up or expanding small businesses in the area. Region of Queens Mayor Christopher Clarke says small businesses have fewer risks. However he says, “If a big business came along and said we would like to locate in the Region of Queens, the answer would be ‘yes’ and you wouldn’t be able to see us for the dust in racing to get it done.” The mayor says it would need to be a well-established industry with a proven track record and there are few of them around. For now though, he says small business is doing its job in reviving the economy of Queens that was so devasted two years ago when Bowater closed with hundreds of jobs lost.
