All In Favour: Mahone Bay Students Get First Hand Look at Council

A group of students at Bayview Community School in Mahone Bay had a first hand look at Municipal Politics yesterday (Thursday, April 26th, 2018).

Roughly 15 to 20 students, many a part of the local Student Council, sat quietly in the library as Mahone Bay Mayor David Devenne and fellow Councillors brought their meeting to order.

The idea of bringing Mahone Bay Council to the school was the brainchild of teacher Jessica Fancy-Landry, and current Acting CAO for Mahone Bay, Maureen Hughes.

“We thought that it would be a great experience to have the (Mahone Bay) Council here and have some of our Junior High student council be a part of it,” says Fancy-Landry.

Students observed and were also given the chance to ask questions as Council went about their order of business.

Mayor David Devenne stressed the importance of including the younger generations in the process of local politics and decision making within the town.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are, your opinion can have some bearing on how your town develops, and most importantly, these are the people in thirty years time who will be sitting around the council table,” says Mayor Devenne.

Some of the students expressed a keen interest.

“I think it was cool how we got to experience the things that are going on in our town and we got to listen to different things that are happening,” says student Naomi Frost.
