Top Doc Says Ticks Shouldn’t Keep Nova Scotians From Enjoying Outdoors

As the weather improves and people make their way outside, a familiar pest is waiting.

Tick populations are on the rise in several regions across the province.

Nova Scotia’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Robert Strang says that’s no reason not to enjoy the outdoors.

“We don’t want to discourage people from being active and outdoors. We actually want to encourage that. But, remind folks that there’s a few fairly simple preventative steps that can be taken to help prevent any tick bites.”

Those include wearing light clothing and enclosed shoes.

People should also ensure their skin is covered and using insect repellent with DEET can be effective as well.

Most importantly, Dr. Strang recommends performing a thorough tick check within two hours of outdoor activity.
