New Wooden Schooner Is Launched From Lunenburg

A new schooner is gracing the harbour in Lunenburg today.

The skies were clear and an eagle flew over in blessing as Lunenburg gave birth to another in a long line of schooners Saturday morning.

Hundreds watched as the 60 footer glided into the waters from the same lauch the Bluenose used.

The vessel, christened “Mahayana” was constructed over two years using traditional methods.

It will be the vehicle for Francesco Nanni’s, “The Blue Dream Project.”

Nanni says, while the project may take the Mahayana across the seas, Lunenburg will remain its home.

“We’re going to have our headquarters here. And then we’re going to do exhibitions – research expeditions and awareness campaigns out of here.”

Nanni goes on to say, this wasn’t just about building a boat, but promoting a way of thinking.

“Take more care in what we have or create. And a wooden boat is a very good example because it requires constant maintenance all the time.”
