Bridgewater Gets More Pedestrian Flags

Motorists may have seen pedestrians carrying orange flags while crossing the street in Bridgewater.

And that’s the point.

The sidewalk flags program is a community initiatve to help make the streets safer for everyone.

Police Chief John Collyer says it has been working.

Collyer says he doesn’t have any stats yet, but the feedback he has received from the public has been positive.

“They see it as another tool that pedestrians can use to get the attention of motorists.”

The sidewalk flags program started with one location at the corner of York & Empire streets.

Collyer says it’s been so successful it now includes three new intersections across the town.

“We had some additional flags so we set up a couple of other sites here in town to get a broader sense of whether people would use them or not.”

Collyer says he is concerned that some flags have been going missing.

He says the flags are in put in place by the community to make people safer.

If anyone is caught stealing the flags they will face charges.
