Poppy Symbol Of Remembrance Day

This was a special Remembrance Day as this is the 100th year of the poppy as a symbol.

Royal Canadian Legion Spokesperson Brian Buffett says the poppy goes back to 1915 and it comes from the poem by Captain John McCrae ‘In Flanders Field’.

“He wrote that poem shortly after burying a good friend of his on the battlefield and noted that the only thing growing in the graveyards were poppies.”

Buffett stresses this is our one chance of the year to remember the 117,000 Canadians who have lost their lives since World War I.
