The plan to build a new bridge in Mahone Bay is becoming difficult to pull off before winter.
A sinkhole appeared on the bridge in late spring so council started looking into replacing it with a new and improved version to be built this fall.
But, Mayor Joe Feeney says they’ve met with an unexpected obstacle.
“Just in the last 10 days it’s sort of come off the rails,” he says. “Our structural engineer unexpectedly passed away.”
Feeney says without the engineer to approve the work they’ll likely miss construction season.
He says they’ll need to get a new engineer to approve plans for the bridge before it can go to tender.
The cost of the new bridge is estimated at around $370,000 dollars.
