Lunenburg Ponders New Recycle Program

The Town of Lunenburg is assessing the viability of a new recycle program.

The Extended Producer Responsibility Program puts the onus on the manufacturer to pick up the cost and manage recycling.

Mayor Rachel Bailey says cost is a big reason to consider adopting the alternative waste management program.

“It costs a lot to look after our garbarge. That’s the reality in which we all live and we can recoop some of those costs.

If implemented, the town would be paid by the manufacturer for residential blue bag material collected with the idea producers might think twice about how much waste their creating if they have to pay to recycle it.

However, Bailey says they’re not jumping into anything right away.

She would like to see proof that the end goal of reducing the amount of packaging manufacturers produce can be achieved.
