Hurricane Gert Causing High Waves, Rip Currents For Next 48 Hours

Environment Canada is advising people to take caution near the coast over the next two days.

Hurricane Gert is moving east toward Newfoundland with winds up to 120 kilometres an hour.

It will not have a direct effect on Nova Scotia but will produce two-to-three metre waves and rip currents Wednesday and Thursday along the South Shore and Tri-County areas.

Meteorologist David Neil says the rip currents could be very strong.

“Some of these currents can move quite fast even if you’re a strong swimmer they can certainly overwhelm you and pull you out to sea.”

Neil says people may want to avoid swimming at beaches for the next 48 hours as it’s not the best time to enter the water.

Waves will gradually diminish Thursday into Friday.
