Lunenburg: Independent Water Test Disputes Stella Bowles’ Results

Lunenburg’s mayor is refuting the results of water quality tests done on the town’s harbour.

Readings reported by Stella Bowles earlier this week, show water quality as being so dangerous even contact with skin should be avoided.

Results of the town’s testing showed the harbour water was within the safe limits for recreational use.

Rachel Bailey says water samples taken August 9 were tested by an independent, provincially approved lab.

“It does get sent away so we didn’t have the results, but we do have them now. They’re not consistent with what Miss Bowles found in her tests. I don’t know how to explain that discrepancy. It certainly is something we have to look further into.”

A report issued by the town, says levels can change frequently in the harbour due to a number of factors.

Bailey wants people to be safe.

“If there’s something we need to do to ensure the health and safety of the people we represent and the people who come to enjoy our town, then, that’s what we’ll have to do.”

Bailey says the harbour is under federal jurisdiction and she will work with them to address these results.

The Mayor says they will continue to test the water weekly throughout the summer and post the results on the town’s website.
