Changing Counties: Region of Queens CAO Takes Position in Bridgewater

The outgoing chief administrative officer in the Region of Queens says it was an opportunity to better respond to his family obligations.

Richard MacLellan resigned today.

He will continue working with council on a transition plan over the next few months before he takes over as CAO in Bridgewater later this year.

Current Bridgewater CAO Ken Smith will be retiring this fall.

MacLellan says there are things in town that resonate well with him.

“The work they have done around sustainability, the work they have done around budgeting and planning and the fact that they’re going to be embarking on some work around how they’re going to continue their role in economic development really looked quite exciting to me.”

MacLellan served as CAO in Queens since June 2015. Before that, he worked for nine years in the HRM and continues to reside there.

He says he’s proud of progress made within the Queens community.

“Whether it’s Lanes at the Lighthouse or Queens Association for Supportive Living at the visitor information centre, I really appreciate and value those partnerships and what we’ve been able to create by working together.”

MacLellan was the third person to serve as CAO in the Region of Queens since amalgamation in 1996.
