Shelburne’s Mayor Says Emergency Dept Closures at Roseway “Totally Unacceptable”

The Emergency Department at Roseway Hospitalwas closed twice last week.

The Nova Scotia Health Authority cites physician availability as the reason for the closure.

Mayor Karen Mattatall says she’s very concerned.

“Everybody in Canada is guaranteed access to health care and it shouldn’t matter where you live. Access isn’t only if you live in large cities.”

Mattatall says the provincial government must ensure that people in Shelburne have access to doctors and that there be no more closures of the emergency department.

“It’s rather interesting, maybe a month ago, the Minister of Finance indicated that the province had achieved some savings over the last year, and suggested that those savings came as a result from lower spending in health care.”

Mayor Mattatall says she was shocked when she heard the comment. She says health care should not be where the government saves money.

Mattatall urges residents to contact the premier, health minister and the health authority each time there’s a closure to let them know it’s not acceptable.
