Ancient Life In Port Joli

What was life like in Queens County before European settlers arrived?

Dr. Matthew Betts can tell you.

The archeologist is the lead on a eight-year project in Port Joli hoping to better understand the lives of those who lived in the area 1,500 years ago.

“Port Joli was a very special place in the past,” he says. “There are over 20 archeological sites. Some of them are the largest that are known in Nova Scotia filled full of artifacts. We’re learning a lot about ancient life on the coast and how it’s changed over time.”

He says some of what he’s learned has practical applications today.

“There was a lot of climate change that went on and the Mi’kmaw creatively responded to that climate change. These sorts of activities can teach us how we can respond in sustainable ways to modern climate change.”

Betts will be sharing some of what he’s found at a talk hosted by the Sipuke’l Gallery next Thursday.

It’s at the Liverpool Town Hall Arts and Cultural Centre on August 25 starting at 6:30 p.m.
