A decision is expected in the next two weeks on a new rudder for Bluenose II.
A new steering mechanism will be installed once this year’s sailing season is complete.
The move follows a consultant report in March indicating the current rudder size is straining the schooner’s hull.
Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan says the department is putting the finishing touches on final details.
“We just have to know that the timeline is tight to make that final decision, get it into dry dock and know exactly what we’re going to do with the rudder decision between composite and wood.”
MacLellan says the department is determining the cost and what the potential impact will be on the vessel.
Bluenose II is currently sailing in Cape Breton, returning to Lunenburg next week and will be down-rigged for the winter on October 1.
