The Town of Mahone Bay is encouraging citizens to think of every day as Earth Day.
The town is now offering ‘plogging kits’ to those who want to keep the community clean.
Plogging refers to the trend of picking up trash while exercising or jogging.
Mayor David Devenne says council was inspired by their local Cub Scout and Beaver troops.
“They’re going around town and they’re picking up garbage that they’re finding … as they’re out on their Cub and Beaver activites.”
Devenne says litter isn’t a big problem for the town but they do see an uptick in the summer due to high tourist numbers.
The mayor expressed his gratitude to the youth for their work and says he hopes people see that litter is everyone’s responsibility.
“The citizens will see what the young people do and realize what their commitment is to having a cleaner environment to grow up in and to play in and that everyone in town will join in the effort.”
Residents can stop by the town to pick up their kit.
Bags of litter can then be set outside with trash on regular garbage pick up days.
