A number of new Royal Canadian Navy Arctic and Patrol Ships are being built in Halifax and for one Lunenburg company, it spells good news.
In fact, 6 new Arctic and Patrol Ships are to be built.
Lunenburg based ABCO Industries will design and build landing craft for the ships, an $8.6 million dollar contract that will take an estimated two and a half years to complete.
A contract of this magnitude means more jobs in Lunenburg.
“Depending on the stage of the project, there will probably be an average of 8 to 10 or more people involved in that particular project,” says ABCO President, John Meisner.
That’s in addition to the already 55 to 60 people currently employed at ABCO Industries.
And it’s not the first time the company has been awarded a Government Agency contract for their work.
“We’ve built for government agencies before, including the Coast Guard, the (Royal Canadian) Navy, Parks Canada, Halifax Police Department Boat, we built the Halifax and St. John Pilot boats for Atlantic Pilotage Authorities and we did build some boats for the Navy several years ago as well,” adds Meisner.
Once completed, the landing craft will be used for the deployment of vehicles from new Royal Canadian Navy Ships currently being built at shipyards in Halifax.
