Construction Starts On Highway 103

If you’re traveling between Liverpool and Bridgewater this summer, expect delays.

Highway 103 is getting a tune up over the summer on both sides of the county line.

Christina Yeadon, project engineer for the province, says the work will include ditching, brush cutting, culvert replacement, and the introduction of wider ashphalt shoulders.

On the Queens County side, some bridges will see repairs.

Those repairs will require the installation of traffic lights.

Yeadon says the work will improve highway conditions and sight lines.

“It will widen both sections, there will be nice paved shoulders,” she says.

Yeadon adds that it will also help drivers be able to identify wildlife near the road quicker and easier.

Construction will wrap up August 31 and is a part of the province’s 2018-19 capital budget.

Dexter Construction has been contracted for the project.

As construction season begins, the province and the Nova Scotia Road Builders Association, are reminding drivers to slow down and be alert in work zones.

“We need to be mindful of workers when traveling through work zones by slowing down, paying attention and driving safely,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Lloyd Hines in a news release. “We’re asking drivers to stay alert because even the smallest mistake can be deadly.”

Fines are doubled and demerit points are assigned to drivers’ records for speeding in work zones.

Fines start at $348.95 and can rise to more than $2,000 depending on other factors.
