RCMP: Sexploitation A Real Danger

If you’re involved in an online relationship and you send pictures or video of a sexually explicit nature, once they’re out there, they’re out there FOR GOOD.

That’s the message from RCMP in the wake of 6 recent cases of what police are calling “SEXTORTION”, where a victim is duped into sending money for fear that an image or video will be leaked to their contacts.

RCMP Corporal, Jennifer Clarke, tells us in 5 of the 6 cases the victims ranged in age from 17 to 52 years of age.

She says many people don’t realize the complexity of what people are capable of doing.

“If you record a video or take a picture with a device that is capable of accessing the Internet, you have no control over who can access that picture or video,” says Clarke. “People are able to manage to access pictures and videos onto people’s devices; it’s so easy to trick someone into believing something happened one way when it really didn’t.”

Clarke reiterates once an image or video is out there via the Internet, you no longer of have control over who sees it.
