NDP Leader Raising Concerns Ahead Of Fall Session

NDP Leader Gary Burrill was making the rounds in the South Shore today ahead of the fall legislative session.

Burrill is concerned about the lack of funding for elder care in Nova Scotia.

He says the $3 million for nursing homes the Liberals included in the spring budget doesn’t make up for $8 million they had previously cut.

“When someone hits you in the face and knocks out four of your teeth and comes back and says I’m going to pay for the dental bills for two. Well that’s better then none, but it it’s not rectifying the error. So I think they need to rectify this error.”

Burrill says nursing homes need that funding restored in order to provide food and services to their residents.

He is also concerned about the way government is launching the pre-primary program.

“None of this has been advanced with the kind of care and forethought that such a major change would require. You hear sometimes people speak about government being conducted on the back on an envelope. I think this is government conducted on the back of a postage stamp.”

Burrill says the lack of preparedness is causing upheaval in the child care system.

He says the consultation government is about to undergo should have happened before the program was announced.
