Canada Post Considering Closing New Germany Post Office on Saturdays

A change could be on the way for post office hours in New Germany.

Canada Post is mulling a decision to close the office on Saturdays after a review determined only a small amount of customers use the outlet that day.

The corporation held discussions last week on the issue.

A letter from Local Area Manager Mary Pretty says they want to serve people in the community when the post office is used the most.

It’s not known when a decision will be made.

Meanwhile, the mayor of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg says it’s cause for concern.

Carolyn Bolivar-Getson says the community deserves to keep its post office operational at its current hours.

“We definitely want to maintain a post office in that area and hopefully this isn’t step one of any further plan to close this post office in the future.”

Municipal councillor for New Germany, Cathy Moore, says she doesn’t agree with the potential change.

“I feel as though this service is being taken away from these small rural communities that people really depend on. Closing it for three or four hours on a Saturday morning, what comes next?”

Moore says people who work regular business hours during the week have Saturdays to use the post office.

The municipality will write a letter to Canada Post outlining their concerns and requesting the hours stay the same.
