Five People Displaced Following Weekend House Fire in Bridgewater

A weekend fire in Bridgewater has displaced five people.

An older wood-frame house on York Street which had been converted into two apartments received extensive damage Sunday afternoon.

Fire crews from both Bridgewater and Hebbville responded to the blaze just prior to 4:30pm.

Bridgewater Fire Chief, Michael Knauss, tells Acadia News the details surrounding the fire itself remain under investigation.

“The fire was at 73-75 York Street and was fully involved in the basement area; it was the contents inside the building that made the fire so large,” says Knauss.

As a result of the fire, 5 people living inside the home, which had been converted into two apartments, have been displaced.

“The people have been displaced for the time being and the family from downstairs have moved in with their family for the time being and upstairs I believe Red Cross has made available some help for them,” adds Knauss.

Canadian Red Cross volunteers have arranged emergency lodging, food, clothing purchases and other support for a couple and teenaged boy from one apartment, while clothing purchases were also arranged for a young couple from the other unit.

There were no injuries reported.

Bridgewater Police and Fire Officials are investigating.
