Hemford Man Honoured For Long Service

A Hemford man has been acknowledged for almost forty years of community service.

Thirty-eight years as Chief of the Hemford and District Fire Department, made Gordon Hunter the longest serving Fire Chief in Canada.

MLA for Lunenburg West Mark Furey recognized that fact by reading Hunter’s name and achievement into the record during the spring sitting of the legislature.

Furey recently present Hunter with a copy of the Member Statement.

The 82-year-old says the dedication of the other department members made the job enjoyable.

“We haven’t really had a big changeover of people. We always get additional people and they all seem to stay. That makes it really nice.”

Hunter says there was never a question he would serve.

“I think it’s just one of these community-based things. If you want to be part of the community then you have to get involved. Otherwise, what have you got? If you don’t get involved then you don’t have anything.”

Hunter attributes the dedication of all the members of the Hemford Fire Department for his longevity in the service.
