Music Educator Urges Schools To Invest In Quality Instructors And Programs

A music educator is urging school boards to concentrate more on educating people instead of trying to run the system like a corporation.

Chalmers Doane started the ukulele in the schools program across the country.

“It’s corporation mentality pretty much throughout. People running the schools are driven by money. Some are gifted on how to save money and some of them are gifted in knowing how to spend money, or you might say how not to spend money and running the schools in the most economic way they can think of,” said Doane.

And says more money should be spent on better educators and programs with a big ephasis on investing in teachers.

The founder of the country’s ukulele education program said there is power in the instrument that teaches the three basics of music; melody, harmony and rhythm.

Doane said, while the recorder is wonderful instrument to introduce students to music, the ukulele’s strength lies in its unique sociability qualities and the ability to develop vocal skills at the same time.

“The nature of the instrument encourages everyone to hum or sing along with the melody,” said Doane

Doane says he would like to see schools continue to invest in quality music programs across the country.
