Lightning Sparks Forest Fire in Clearland

A 1.7 acre wildfire in Clearland near Mahone Bay, is now under control thanks to the efforts of firefighters from Lunenburg, Oakhill, Blockhouse and Martin’s River.

The fire began last (Sunday) night near the old Dump Road, making it very difficult to get to for firefighters.

Mahone Bay Fire Chief, Richard Nowe, chalks it up to a lightning strike.

“We’ve pretty much determined it as a lightning strike,” says Chief Nowe. “The DNR (Department of Natural Resources) is no site now and pretty much taken control of the scene, just watching it and checking for hot spots now.”

Nowe tells Acadia News there were no homes in a immediate vicinity in any danger and there were no injuries reported.

While it was tough to get to, firefighters managed to bring it under control and are now in the mop-up phase.

The DNR is expected to return to the scene tomorrow (Tues.) to check on the scene.
