Blood Donors Needed: Roll Up That Sleeve and Give

The call is out for Canadians right across the country to roll up their sleeves and donate blood.

As we head into the Labour Day Long weekend next week, Canadian Blood Services needs to fill roughly 22,000 appointments in order to get inventory levels up.

Blood donor clinics are currently underway across the South Shore in both Bridgewater and Liverpool this week, but the urgency still remains, according to Canadian Blood Services.

“We still have a ways to go over the next ten days or so and even coming out of the Labour Day long weekend, we’ve had two events in the South Shore already this week and a great response,” says Peter MacDonald, Director of Donor Relations for Atlantic Canada.

While they are looking to rebuild their blood inventory heading into the Labour Day Long weekend, MacDonald notes only about 4 per-cent of Canadians are active blood donors.

“We often see a dip in our collections during the summer months and that has happened, we’re not in a position where there’d be any impacts to patient care at this time but that’s definitely something we want to avoid,” adds MacDonald.
