A local community hall will now run throughout the year thanks to newly announced government funding.
The Broad Cove Community Association received almost $45,000 in new money from the province and Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.
Association Chair Mary Frier says they went to the community to find out how the funding should be spent on the Broad Cove Community Centre.
“We used to be open twelve months of the year, and then oil prices skyrocketed and it was just not efficient to keep it running. We did a little survey in our community, and they said they’d like it to be year round, and they’d like it to be accessible.”
The province announced $35,000 and the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg will contribute another $9500 to help winterize and make the building accessible.
Lunenburg West MLA Mark Furey was on hand to make the announcement.
“To insulate this building and allow those community events to take place into our winter months, really keeps the community alive all year round.”
Work on the hall has already begun.
It’s expected the new heat pumps, insulation, doors and windows will be in place before the snow flies.
