There will be a mayoral race in Lunenburg.
David Penney will challenge current mayor Rachel Bailey this fall.
The 65 year-old has lived in Lunenburg since 2001.
Penney says the town is growing and more needs to be done to support it.
“In regards to all the issues around infrastructure and parking and development on a grand scale. And, not only from a retailers perspective but, everything that goes along with that, such as affordable housing for people.”
Penney has served as a mediator in industrial and family matters and was a police officer with the Durham Regional force.
He is making his first run at municipal politics and believes he has the time, energy and commitment for the job.
“Although I’ve been encouraged to seek a position as a councillor, I feel that my skill set best suits me to take the mayoral job, if possible.”
He says he wants to try and make council meetings more open, accessible and convenient for residents.
Bailey announced her intent to reoffer in an interview with CKBW/Country 100.7 on June 24.
Municipal elections will be held October 15.
