Lack Of Rain Hurting Local Food Production

A dry summer is causing some concerns for the owner of Wile’s Lake Farm Market in Wileville.

Normally by mid-August there is a break in the weather and rainfall helps grow crops.

However, an irrigation system has been in place due to the lack of rain.

Elspeth MacLean-Wile says it’s a huge cost.

“It’s a cost you really don’t recoup in the price that you’re getting in the marketplace. It’s cost you basically eat and don’t necessarily pass on to the consumer.”

She says there is concern regarding their pumpkin and squash crop this fall.

McLean-Wile says the size of them may be affected by not having enough water.

Fruit growers in the Annapolis Valley are also hoping for significant rain to bolster apple production.
