Lighthouse Lens Being Returned To Its Home

A beacon that helped guide mariners into port in Clark’s Harbour from 1902 through to the 1980s will soon be returned home.

The lens, discovered in an old government warehouse in Saint John, New Brunswick, was used on both the original Cape Sable Lighthouse, built in 1861 and its replacement built in the early 1920s.

Mayor Leigh Stoddart tells Acadia News the process is underway to reassemble the lens and transport it to Clark’s Harbour in plenty of time for next year’s celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the town.

“It’s perfect timing for us. We’ve taken the initiative here to get the lighthouse restored. It’s important to us to have it back and we’re looking forward to it.”

He says there’s also a connection to Yarmouth..

“It was stored in Yarmouth originally. Yarmouth, as I understand, wanted a fire truck that they had in Saint John and Saint John wanted the lens that they had in Yarmouth, so they made a swap.”

The lens will be placed on display at the Seaside Heritage Center in Clark’s Harbour.
