Psoriasis Affecting More Than Just Skin

According to a recent study, young adults living with psoriasis feel self-conscious, and often have lower self-esteem.

Dermatologist, Dr. Kerri Purdy says more than 60% say they avoid something as simple as a handshake for fear of judgment.

She says that’s because most people have a misunderstand about what causes the disease.

“No, this is not an infectious or contagious condition and it’s okay to touch people with psoriasis, you’re not going to catch it. You know, they’re being made to feel like that have a disease that’s ‘gross’ if you will, and it’s not at all.”

October is Psoriasis Awareness Month.

Purdy says it’s a great opportunity to reach out to those who are struggling and help people better understand the disease.

She says new treatments are available all the time and sufferers should talk with their doctor about things that may help.
