Voters Hear From Mahone Bay Mayoral Candidates

Not too many fireworks at the Mahone Bay mayoral debate last night.

David Devenne and Kelly Wilson spent about two hours answering questions from the public on everything from accessibility to immigration.

Both are current councillors for the town meaning one of them will be out of a job once a new council is sworn in.

Devenne says, if elected, his number one priority will be to make council proceedings more transparent.

He says he would hope to implement the use of facebook and twitter to help keep residents in the loop.

In a lighter moment during the evening Devenne was asked what he would do to lower the deer population and prevent Lyme Disease spread by ticks.

He admitted as mayor his power over nature was limited but had this advice to share:

Meanwhile, Kelly Wilson says his decision to run for mayor in this municipal election was made 14 months ago.

“I think the town needs some direction. We need to have the collaborative approach but we also need to have a decision making ability and I think that’s part of what I bring to the party.”

Wilson says he’s disappointed in the lack of facility management in the town.

He says structural and accessibility issues with the fire hall and town hall can’t wait much longer to be solved.

But he says his main focus is on keeping the town diverse.

“We up until recently have been focusing on what people are calling the ‘grey tsunami’ coming into Lunenburg County,” he says. “Those things are falling into place. But, we need to continue to attract young people because they’re the ones who are going to be paying the bills.”

During the evening another hot topic came up.

When asked about the idea of amalgamating with other communities in Lunenburg County, Wilson had this to say:

People can cast their ballot in advance on Saturday and next Tuesday at Mahone Bay town hall from 12 until 8 p.m.

Election day is October 15th.
