Councillors in the Town of Lunenburg don’t want to set their own salaries.
Currently, town council decides how much they receive in remuneration.
Mayor Rachel Bailey says the recent vote to increase their honourariums to make up for changes to federal tax law didn’t sit well with council.
“It’s always a quandary councillors are put it, necessary in some ways, but an unfortunate situation of being in a conflict of interest when we have to make the decision on our own remuneration.”
Bailey says council is looking into a model Bridgewater uses.
Staff are preparing a report to determine if a panel made up of former councillors, town staff and the public would be better able to recommend appropriate compensation for a sitting council.
“I would envision that there would be a recommendation from the committee, if one is struck. And it would be unusual for councillors then not to take that recommendation, but it would certainly be their option.”
That staff report will be presented to council in an upcoming session.
