Shelburne Students March To Protest Clearcutting

Students from Shelburne High School walked out of class with a mission.

They were protesting the amount of clear cutting in the area as part of a global movement called Extinction Rebellion.

The movement is working to call attention climate breakdown and biodiversity loss.

Citizenship teacher Michelle Grant says the topic was was discussed as part of their citizenship class.

“I’m just really proud of them that they’ve put this all together in a pretty short amount of time, just a couple of weeks and gotten lots of attention.”

Grade nine student Evan Harris was one of the organizers of the walk out.

He says the impacts of climate change are felt by everyone.

“It’s concerning because it can ruin our environment, our community. Really, anything, if you go fishing, hunting maybe.”

Harris is pleased the walk out could be used to make a contribution to the community by raising awareness of the effects of clearcutting on the environment.
