Beyond The Poppy: Canadian Blood Services Urge Donations

With Remembrance Day this week, Canadian Blood Services wants you to give blood in honour of those who’ve given their lives.

Atlantic Director of Donor Relations, Peter MacDonald, says they have a special relationship with the Canadian Forces.

“The genesis of the blood system for voluntary blood donation in Canada is essentially the Second World War and we have a long history and partnership with the Canadian Military.”

MacDonald says there are currently a little under 400,000 active donors in Canada, and they need around 50,000 new donors this year to keep up with demand.

“In terms of the participation rate its 1 in 2 Canadians are eligible to give blood, it’s actually only 1 in 60 that do.”

He says rolling up your sleeve is a great way to show your gratitude for those who sacrificed so much.
