Memorial Cross Stolen From Newburne Church

A church in Lunenburg County appears to have been the target of a robbery.

Sandra Martin arrived at Transfiguration Anglican Church in Newburne Sunday to find a crucifix, in memory of her uncle who was killed in France in World War II, was missing.

The cross was located on the alter and its base is inscribed “In memory of Pte Fred Wentzell.”

Martin says she is sad the cross is gone.

“The shock of it, really, why would anyone take it?”

The cross went missing sometime between May 26 and June 9.

Martin has contacted the RCMP about the alleged theft and is optimistic things will work out.

“We are hoping that whoever took it may just return it to the church.”
