Mayor Says ER Closures Causing Stress And Fear

The mayor of Shelburne says the current emergency department closures go beyond unacceptable.

The ER at Roseway Hospital was closed over 50 hours just this weekend alone.

Mayor Karen Mattatall says it creates a “terrifying” situation.

“But particularly I think of people with a pre-existing condition that are depending on having a hospital that’s close and is open.”

She says if the Nova Scotia Health Authority weren’t so top-heavy, there might be money to keep ER’s open. Mattatall says Nova Scotia leads in the cost of health care administration, per capita, of any other province in Canada at approximately 35 per cent of the total health care budget.

“And yet we have hospitals closed all around the province. We have people without doctors. Something isn’t right and the province needs to start acknowledging that and fix it.”

The emergency department at Roseway will close again at 6 this evening (Monday June 17, reopening at 8 ‘o’clock tomorrow morning (Tues June 18).
