It’s that time of year. The time for turtles to be overcome with the desire to lay eggs. Actually, it seems a bit late, but the weather hasn’t made for ideal egg laying. So the season seemed to be a bit extended.
That means turtles crawling on beaches, crossing roads where there are no crossings and generally making a nuisance of themselves at times.
Turtles get pretty single minded about the whole egg laying thing, which makes it hard to stop them from crossing the road. You can help them on their way. Although if it’s a snapping turtle you do have to be a bit cautious. A lot of people have no idea how long their necks are. About the only safe place to pick up a snapping turtle is to grab the shell above the hind legs. Grab them by the side and those nasty little jaws can reach you. Or, maybe use that snow shovel you forgot to take out of the car this spring.
