Municipality of the District of Chester Passes 2019-20 Budget

Status quo for commercial and residential tax rates in the Municipality of Chester.

They passed their 2019-20 budget June 27.

The residential rate remained at 70.5 cents per $100 of assessment for the third straight year while the commercial rate stayed at $1.53 for its seventh year in a row.

Warden Allen Webber says it’s something to highlight.

“I think that it’s a significant goal and we’re happy that we were able to do that and I hope that the taxpayers would be too because they’re getting a lot of service.”

The capital budget of nearly $6.9-million includes $2.5-million to upgrade and increase capacity in the leachate treatment plant at Kaizer Meadow Landfill.

There is also $450,000 for Highway 3 streetscape work.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal is expected to repave from Marriotts Cove to Chester this year.

Webber says they jumped at the opportunity.

“If we want to have wider shoulders for people to walk and bicycle on, if we want to make intersection improvements then now is the time to do it. It’s taking advantage of the opportunity. If we didn’t do it and waited, it would cost even more.”

The municipality’s operating budget is over $26-million.
